Layer Cake Loop Quilt

I am planning to sew a quilt with a beginner and therefore,  I was looking for patterns that are perfect for a beginner. When Fatquartershop asked for a pattern testing and sew along, that was the perfect coincidence. My stash was still filled with Kaffe Fassett fabrics which I wanted to use up. It was no question: I was in the quilt along! 

In der letzten Zeit habe ich mich ein wenig beschäftigt mit Quilts für Anfänger. Was würde wohl eine Anfängerin nähen können? Und vor allem, was wäre ein schönes Ergebnis? Im Frühjahr werde ich mit einer Quiltanfängerin einen Quilt nähen... das ist mein Ansporn.

Da kam der Layer Cake Loop Quilt von Fatquartershop bzw Jolly Jabber (der Blog von FQS) gerade richtig und ich habe mich gerne dort angemeldet und mitgemacht.

The pattern is part of the layer cake pattern resources on the blog which is a great collection of patterns for precuts. I really want to make a bit of advertisement: Find more free quilt patterns at Fat Quarter Shop. They really have a huge pattern ressource there.

I like those Kaffe Fassett fabrics but sometimes they tend to be a bit wild - at least wild for me. So I planned to also use red solids. Each block is made up of  four parts and one or two parts will be wild fabrics only ;) The fabrics I have are mostly red based  and my quilt will be red.

Auf dem Blog gibt es noch viele weitere Muster, die mit Layer Cakes, Charm Packs usw gefertigt werden können. Wenn man noch keine große Vielfalt an Stoffen im eigenen Stoffvorrat hat, dann sind diese Stoffpäckchen eine perfekte Lösung für eine abgestimmte Stoffvielfalt. Layercakes und das Muster sind also schon einmal anfängertauglich.

Doch nun zu meinem Quilt: Ich wollte meine vorhandenen Kaffe Fassett Stoffe benutzen. Und wer diese Stoffe kennt, weiß, dass es schon einmal wild werden kann. Also habe ich beschlossen, diese bunt gemusterten Stoffe mit roten Unis zu kombinieren. Immer zwei gemusterte Stoffe kommen in einen Block. Damit wollte ich das Ganze ein wenig beruhigen.  Hier seht Ihr meine Stoffauswahl.

The blocks are made of squares and rectangles -which is perfect for beginners. 

Die Blöcke bestehen aus Quadraten und Rechtecken - nix Schräges - also perfekt für Anfänger! Ein Block besteht aus 4 Teilen. Und es gibt keine Schnittstellen, die zusammentreffen müssen.

The blocks are sewn into rows. I hung them on a cabin skeleton because they still were as incomplete as the wooden cabin.

Die Blöcke habe ich in Reihen zusammengefügt. Hier hängen sie an einem Blockhüttengerüst. Ein wenig unvollständig  noch wie das Holzhaus.

And here is the final layout and top. 5 rows with six blocks each. It was fast to sew and a perfect project to use up big scraps. I loved the pattern. Sometimes you have to make something really fast. The quilting has to wait a bit: The fleece for the backing is not here yet and the lining neither.

6 Reihen á 5 Blöcke sehen dann zusammengenäht so aus. 

Das Top geht ruckzuck zu nähen und macht auch fortgeschrittenen Quiltern Spaß. Ab und zu darf es auch mal schnell und einfach gehen. Jetzt muss ich alles nur noch quilten. Das Rückseitenfleece liegt schon hier.

Just for your information: Fatquartershop is an US online shop where I shop when I cannot get the material in Germany. Here in Germany we get new fabrics 1-2 months later as the US shops which is really annoying. And I was really surprised that Fatquarteshop reimbursed my fabrics for this quilt with a shopping voucher. Thank you for that!
